Beth Collar

Curated by GUTS

GUTS, Engeldamm 64, 10179 Berlin-Kreuzberg,

Yes, it is the second show of Beth Collar at GUTS. Yes, another solo. Yes, we don't know what Beth's gonna show. Yes, who knows, a performance or a sculpture. Yes, aeroelastic forces might play a role in that show. Yes. This is exciting. Yes, children can understand that. Yes, the fluttering caused the storm. Of course a sculpture could crumble too. Yes, nothing lasts forever. Yes, GUTS has moved to Engeldamm 64. Yes, in Mitte. Yes, a bigger space. Oh yes, the new curtains make it feel totally different. Yes, to keep the conversation ongoing is crucial. Yes, at least to maintain a certain autonomy. Of course, the material is alive. Yes, the past is present. Yes. looking forward to it.

Beth Collar (Born Cambridge, England, 1984) is an interdisciplinary artist trying to live and work in Berlin, Germany. Her work employs carving, remembering, drawing, storytelling and performance to fathom out how unconscious impulses are shaped by objects and how collective emanations of the past affect the present and the personal.
Making the familiar unfamiliar, her things often explore the lingering resonance of inherited imagery, particularly within Christian iconography.

GUTS

GUTS is an artist-run space structured around peer-to-peer exchange. A permanent feature of the space is a large white curtain that transforms the room into a “soft space.” It prioritizes dialogue and experimentation, fostering original forms that respond to the unusual spatial conditions of its soft walls and curved surfaces.

The name GUTS draws on expressions such as gut feeling and to have guts. It points to forms of decision-making that extend beyond cognition, into the enteric nervous system, often referred to as the “second brain,” a site of intuition, mood, and regulation.

The folds of the curtain are read as an enlarged analogue of this internal structure.

Independently (un)funded, the space allows for a high degree of freedom. Supported by a deliberately light apparatus, GUTS functions as a responsive exhibition platform, unbound by normative conventions.
